How do I change my registration details once I have entered them?

To alter your registration details you have two options:

  • Re-register with the correct details, then send an email to changes@musicianlocation.com with details about your incorrect registration to allow us to identify it (eg date of entry, contact phone and/or email address). We will then delete the incorrect registration.

    OR
  • Send an email to changes@musicianlocation.com with details about your incorrect registration to allow us to identify it (eg date of entry, contact phone and/or email address), and the changes that you want to make. We will then make the appropriate changes to the registration details.

Why can't I search by location?

The Location field on the registration page is a free text field which allows you to type in anything you want. It was designed this way so it doesn't limit the user's choice as to what location they put in.

The trouble with free text is it is difficult to use in a search. If you mis-spell your search entry, it probably won't match with anything. Also, what if a musician put their suburb in the location field, but you search for the capital city that contains that suburb? You would miss the entry because you didn't type in the suburb.

Therefore to keep things simple and to give you the best chance of finding appropriate matches, you can't search by location. Even if a search gives you 20 or more results, it is not that hard to scan through them and find the ones close to your location. You can also sort the search results alphabetically on the location field, by clicking on the location heading. This simplifies the process of scanning through the results.

Why do I get "You do not have permission to view this page" or "Session timed out" errors?

This normally occurs if you have a period of inactivity while using the site. You will get the error if the inactivity time is about 20 minutes. If this is the case you have to close and reopen your browser window, then go back to the MusicianLocation site.

**IMPORTANT NOTE FOR AOL USERS**
It appears that SOME users of the AOL branded internet browser get the above error message when trying to register or search. Two AOL users have reported this problem, and it is unknown if all AOL users are affected. If there are any AOL users out there who DO NOT have any problems registering or searching it would be much appreciated if they would email enquiries@musicianlocation.com and let us know. At this time the only ways around this problem is to either:

  1. Minimise the AOL browser after logging in to the internet, and browse this site using a copy of Internet Explorer or Netscape.
    OR
  2. Login to the internet using an alternative ISP and use Internet Explorer or Netscape for browsing.

Why do I get "Scripting Error. Please report the above error to your system administrator."?

This error message appears when there is a temporary glitch with the web server that hosts MusicianLocation. Unfortunately these gitches do happen on occasion (although very infrequently). Normally if you try again after a couple of hours the error will disappear. If this message keeps appearing, please send a message to problems@musicianlocation.com.

Why am I not getting any results when I do a search?

There are a couple of reasons why this may be the case.

Firstly, you may be making selections in too many of the fields in the search form. When people register, they don't always fill in all the fields on the registration form. For example, if you specify GUITAR-BASS, MALE, PROFESSIONAL and 20-29 in your search and someone has only specified GUITAR-BASS, MALE and 20-29 when they registered, then you will not see this person in the search results. This is because you specified PROFESSIONAL, but they didn't.

If you leave a particular field on the search page blank, you will pick up database entries containing ALL the possible variations of that field, including those entries that left the field blank. So, the less fields you make selections in on the SEARCH page, the more results you will get. Conversely the more fields you make selections in, the less results you will get.

A good search strategy is this:
First time around, only make a selection in the MUSICIAN REQUIRED field (if looking for a band), or the PRIMARY INSTRUMENT field (if looking for a musician), then hit SEARCH.
If you get too many results from this, then select the SEARCH AGAIN link, and make selections in one or more of the other search fields. This will narrow down your list of search results.

Secondly, there may not be any entries in the database at this time that match what you are looking for. If you have tried the search strategy outlined above and gotten no results, leave it for a few days, then try again. Listings to the site are always being added.
