NAVIGATION COURSE

The successful deployment of a Search & Rescue Team is heavily dependent on good navigation skills at all levels. Searchers need to be able to find their way to the RV point. A search controller must be able to identify and prioritise good search sectors from a map. A Team Leaer must be able to go to the correct area and sub-sector it. Briefings and debriefings will also often centre on a map. Locations of the misper, clues and other points of interest all need to be communicated. Ambulances and other resources may need to be called.

ALSAR acknowledges that the NNAS is a useful measure of navigational skills.

Attending a navigation course is a brave thing to do as you are putting yourself in the spotlight. It is much easier to just carry on with what you are doing and hope it is OK. However, we think this is a big risk given that some of the oportunities listed above engender a legal liability.

Our navigation courses are very supportive. On arrival you will be assessed on your existing skills. You will be placed in a group of 2 or 3 delegates of similar ability. Each group is allocated an instructor for the weekend - It is then up to each group to decide what training they do. In this way, training is totally directed to your individual needs. Generally, very little time is spent in the classroom. On the Sunday afternoon, assessments are carried out to the standards laid down by NNAS.

Some people achieve Bronze and some Silver. Some do not achieve an award but will have learnt a great deal. Some choose not to be assessed.

There is no requirement for previous experience, and in any case averyone is assessed on arrival. This course is about developing your skills. If you wish to include some work with GPS this can be accommodated.

All our instructors are experienced members of Search & Rescue teams.

Course Fee: £45
