Basic Lowland Search Techniques Course

This course is designed to give participants the knowledge, understanding and skills needed by a team member during a lowland vulnerable missing person search. This is the introductory course to lowland search, which should be completed by all team members before becoming operational. As such, it does not assume any previous knowledge or require special equipment.

The course follows the current ALSAR syllabus, and is delivered and assessed by operational members of several ALSAR Teams. Each course is led by an experienced and qualified Search Controller. We aim to equip the delegate to participate in searches with any Lowland Search Unit by drawing on our own experiences.

The course starts at 1930hrs Friday evening and finishes around 1600hrs Sunday afternoon.

The syllabus includes:

Searcher Preparedness The Callout

Search Techniques Preservation of Evidence

Misper Behaviour Search Management

The course is a blend of classroom and practical sessions and includes an evening exercise. All practical sessions are scenario based to ensure realism, and sufficient time is allocated for reflection and evaluation.

The course is assessed in two ways. Throughout the course, participants are observed and assessed on their performance with written feedback delivered. On the Sunday participants will sit a short multiple-choice test. Only on successful completion of these two elements will participants be certificated. This certificate lasts three years.
