How to prevent cot death (SIDS)

The risk of cot death (SIDS, crib death) can be eliminated by ensuring that babies sleep on mattresses known to be free from the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony (and using only certain specified bedding). The BabeSafe range of bassinet and cot mattresses complies with this requirement.

All other types of infant mattress (including 'organic' mattresses) should be enclosed in a BabeSafe slip-on mattress cover.

BabeSafe mattresses and mattress covers are sold at babycare retail outlets throughout New Zealand.  BabeSafe mattress covers are available in other countries by mail order.

It is essential to use the specified bedding on top of a BabeSafe mattress or BabeSafe mattress cover. On top of the BabeSafe mattress/cover place a pure cotton flat blanket and tuck this in securely. On top of that blanket place two pure cotton sheets. On top of the upper sheet place pure wool or pure cotton flat blanket/s.  (The baby sleeps between the two sheets.)

Do not use any of the following items:
  • Sheepskin or lambskin
  • Sheepfleece or lambfleece underlay
  • Any form of mattress protector
  • Any form of mattress pad 
  • Any blanket which contains polyester
  • Any blanket which contains acrylic
  • Sleeping-bag or clothing-bag
  • Duvet or quilt
  • Pillows or cushions
  • Any bedding item which is quilted or padded or 'filled' 
To clean a BabeSafe mattress or BabeSafe mattress cover:  Wipe with pure soap and water, and dry with a towel.  Do not use chemical bleaches or sterilants.

There has been no reported cot death on a BabeSafe mattress or on any mattress wrapped in accordance with the BabeSafe protocol.
